Assessment Criteria Guidelines – Project Work
We all know that in good classroom practice assessment is a natural by-product of the classroom experience and should be a celebration of achievement. In using such activities as investigations, projects or group work for assessment purposes a criteria-based assessment is recommended that is defined from the sub-tasks of the activity.

Communication

3 All necessary steps of the solution have been well documented.

2 The documentation of the solution is somewhat sparse, but adequate.

1 Documentation of the solution is poor.

Presentation

3 The presentation is a good record of the solution.

2 The solution suffers somewhat from untidiness, disorganization, or poor use of  language. The presentation is a weak record of the solution.

1 The student has made little effort to use appropriate language and has given little thought to a neat and organized presentation of the solution. The presentation is a poor record of the solution of the problem.

Mathematical Notation and Terminology

3 The student uses correct and appropriate notation and terminology throughout.

2 The student sometimes uses correct notation and terminology.

1 The student consistently uses incorrect notation and/or terminology.

Content

3 A mathematical strategy relevant to the activity has been correctly applied
throughout the solution.

2 A mathematical strategy relevant to the activity has been applied with some  errors.

1 The strategy selected is inappropriate to solving the problem.                                    > TOP

Use of Technology

3 The use of the technology is relevant to the solution, and enhances the solution   significantly.

2 Limited or routine use of the technology is made with little enhancement to the activity.

1 Technology is used inappropriately, i.e., the student uses technology mainly for procedures that can be done mentally or easily by hand.

Results

3 The calculations are largely accurate.

2 The calculations are somewhat accurate.

1 The calculations are barely accurate.

Conclusions

3 The reasonableness and/or possible limitations of the results have been thoroughly considered.

2 A superficial analysis of the reasonableness of the results is displayed.

1 Hardly any consideration or evaluation of the results have been given.

Extensions

3 Awareness of the implications of the solution and ways to expand upon the problem have been considered.

2 Either awareness of the implications of the solution or ways to expand upon the problem have been considered.

1 Little consideration to either of the above has been given.

Some of the above assessment criteria guidelines are modified from the guidelines for portfolio and project work of the International Baccalaureate Organization.                                          > TOP
