COMPUTER ALGEBRA SYSTEMS - TECHNOLOGY IN MATHEMATICS EDUCATION
Using CAS as a “Black Box”
“Some mathematics becomes more important because technology requires it.
Some mathematics becomes less important because technology replaces it.
Some mathematics becomes possible because technology allows it.”
(Bert Waits)

In doing investigations, mathematical modeling, and problem-solving, the emphasis is on higher order skills, such as: pattern recognition in order to form conjectures and the translation of a real life problem into a mathematical system, and hence interpreting and evaluating the solution in
light of the problem, The technology performs the tedious lower order algorithmic manipulations. This allows the student to concentrate on concept and methodology. In addition, technology
allows for solutions previously denied students until much later in their mathematical development, or not at all.
