first student conference
On Saturday, March 12th, 2005 VIS held its first Student CAS Mini-Workshop in
order to introduce IB students to the power of the CAS software DERIVE 6 for use in IB internal assessment.
There were student presentations included in this
workshop. It was geared toward grade 11 students, and our hope is that
next year VIS will host the first international schools’ IB
students’ workshop and conference.
It was impressive indeed that on this cold damp
morning 6l out of 67 11th graders voluntarily found their way to school to
learn about computer algebra systems...

This is the third year in a row that I am a
workshop leader at this event, and it is indeed a marvelous opportunity
to learn different software, such as Autograph – a graphing software, Derive – a computer algebra
software, Excel,
and geometry dynamic systems such as Cabrie and Geometers Sketchpad.
It is hosted in the lovely rural setting of the
Oundle, Peterborough. This is the 11th year that Douglas Butler has
offered this successful series of workshops.
