COMPUTER ALGEBRA SYSTEMS - TECHNOLOGY IN MATHEMATICS EDUCATION
CAS AND research
Research efforts

Most teachers that use technology in their classroom have a “gut feeling” about its positive impact in enhancing understanding of concepts and analytical structures. Although there is much anecdotal evidence to support this, there is still little formal research. At the Vienna International School we have conducted some preliminary informal research on our own students. The results are recorded in my publications.

Austria is the country with the most extensive government sponsored research on the effects of CAS in learning and assessment. Their research procedures and results can be read HERE.

Three main names stand out in my mind as pioneers and leaders in assessing the impact of technology in mathematics education. The contributions of the first two in particular are often available in the Mathematics Teacher, one of the journals of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics  www.nctm.org

Watch this section for developments in research areas, particularly at the Vienna International School where we hope to institute some formal research procedures to evaluate our efforts in integrating technology into our mathematics curricula and assessment.
