COMPUTER ALGEBRA SYSTEMS - TECHNOLOGY IN MATHEMATICS EDUCATION
CAS – What is it?
A computer algebra system (CAS) is a software program that can perform symbolic computations. Typically a CAS allows for: solving equations, simplification of algebraic procedures, differentiation, integration, graphing in 2 and 3 dimensions, linear algebra systems to allow matrix computations, and program language enabling users to implement their own algorithms. With the exception of a few countries and examination systems, its use in education is seen globally as still in its embryonic stage. With more sharing of experience from school boards encouraging and allowing its use in curricula and assessment, more school systems are opting for experimental programs in the use of CAS. There are government-supported programs to assess the effects of teaching with CAS, e.g., Austria. www.acdca.ac.at
